This comprehensive training program is designed for Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs) in the Private Voluntary Independent (PVI) sector. Aligned with the UK’s Department for Education (DfE) standards and the 2022 Education White Paper “Opportunity for all,” this course provides SENCOs with the knowledge and skills necessary to support children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in early years settings. Topics include legislative frameworks, person-centred approaches, high-quality practice, and collaboration with external agencies.

Course Objectives:

  1. Understand the SENCO Role:
    • Learn about the responsibilities of SENCOs in early years settings, specifically within the PVI sector.
  2. Familiarize with Key Legislation:
    • Gain knowledge of key UK laws and statutory guidance relevant to SEND, such as the Children and Families Act 2014 and the SEND Code of Practice 2015.
  3. Apply Person-Centred Approaches:
    • Develop strategies to support children by focusing on individual needs and working closely with families.
  4. Implement the Graduated Approach:
    • Master the four stages of the Graduated Approach for early identification, setting outcomes, provision, and reviewing SEND support.
  5. Enhance SEND Expertise:
    • Engage with local services, external specialists, and develop continuous professional development (CPD) plans for improving SEND practices.
  6. Support Transitions:
    • Plan and manage transitions for children with SEND, ensuring smooth handovers and continued support.
  7. Collaborate and Build Networks:
    • Strengthen collaboration with specialists and foster a community of practice with other SENCOs for ongoing support and expertise development.
